Sam’s Perspective (1st Time Buyer)

šŸ†• Status Update: Still grinding on the Series 65. I don’t know for sure if I’ll pass, but I’m putting in the work because the goal is to open up more options, create new opportunities, and see what I’m capable of.

On the business buying side, I’ve been thinking a lot about how social media makes this path seem way easier than it actually is. You’ll see someone say, ā€œJust buy an HVAC business and you’re set.ā€ Or one I saw this week:

ā€œThere’s so much money out there, you just have to go get it.ā€
Yeah, no kidding, brother. That’s literally why I’m here.

The reality is, this stuff is not easy. Finding a business to buy isn’t glamorous. It’s full of spreadsheets, dead-end calls, flaky sellers, red flags, inflated numbers, and waiting around for info that might never come. But I keep showing up because I know exactly why I’m doing this.

My why is simple. I want to build a life where my wife doesn’t have to work unless she wants to. That’s the goal. So if you’re in this too, trying to figure it all out, don’t get distracted by the highlight reels. Take a step back, refocus, and keep going. The payoff comes later, not on the first try.

Tyler’s Perspective (Experienced Buyer)

šŸ†• Status Update: One thing we haven’t talked much about—but that hit me this weekend—is just how important location is when looking for a small business to buy.

Why does location matter so much? Because every business depends on its customer base, and customers aren’t evenly distributed. Some areas of the U.S. have more swimming pools (hello, pool service businesses), others have higher concentrations of pet owners (great for pet grooming or boarding), and rural areas might support agricultural equipment rentals, while urban markets might be better for retail or logistics.

It’s not an exact science, but tools like the U.S. Census Bureau or your local Chamber of Commerce can help you dig into the age, income, and lifestyle of local populations—and how that matches the business model.

Bottom line: don’t just fall in love with the business—fall in love with where it is. A good business in the right place can become a great investment.

 šŸ’” Cool Business Idea: text

Small business owners don’t need another crisis.
But they’re usually one ignored filter, dead battery, or expired fire extinguisher away from one.

This week’s Cool Business Idea is Check Yo Stuff — a lightweight web app that helps small businesses and homeowners track basic maintenance before stuff breaks.
It’s not sexy — but neither is a lawsuit over an AED that didn’t work or a 1-star Airbnb review because the fridge stopped working.

This app is simple:

  • Add your stuff (AC, mower, espresso machine, AED)

  • Get pre-built checklists and reminder timelines

  • Assign tasks to team members or contractors

  • Upload receipts, warranties, and manuals

  • Get reminders before it breaks
    Check before you wreck.

šŸ›  Tools + Expenses to Launch

  • Loveable, Supabase, or Glide → $20–$50/month

  • Firebase or Airtable for backend tracking (optional) → free to low cost

  • Domain name + branding → ~$50–$100

  • Stripe or Lemon Squeezy for payments → standard fees

  • Mobile-first design is a must

Startup Cost Estimate:

  • DIY: $150–$400

  • With branding + clean UI: $1,000–$2,000

šŸŽÆ Why This Is a Good Idea to Start

Preventative maintenance is a huge blind spot for small business owners, landlords, and even short-term rental operators.
They want to stay on top of it, but there’s no simple tool built just for them.
This isn’t about AI. It’s about not forgetting to replace the thing that ruins your day when it breaks.

It’s boring. It’s brilliant. It’s buildable.
And if you launch it, you’ll help people avoid expensive screwups — which they’re more than happy to pay for.
