🚤 Boat Rental Company - Marco Island Making $1M/yr!

Welcome Back to The Corporate Pivot!

This week, a reminder: life’s not slowing down.

Responsibilities pile up. Time speeds up. That’s why it’s worth grinding now, to get your freedom back while it still matters.

But don’t overthink it. The business world loves to overcomplicate things. Buzzwords, acronyms, endless strategy slides.

The truth? You don’t need all that. You just need a clear goal and the willingness to start.

That’s what we’re here for at The Corporate Pivot. Real steps. Real stories. Real freedom, if you’re willing to go after it.

Here’s what we have for you today:

Pivot Perspectives:

Sam talks about a concrete contractor with solid numbers on paper, but no team behind it, making it business 3 out of 100 in his Secretary Method journey.

Tyler talks about how weak systems slowed him down after buying a service business, and why operational structure matters just as much as the customer list.

Sam’s Perspective (1st Time Buyer)

🆕 Status Update: Secretary Method 3/100 – Concrete Contractor

This week I checked out a concrete contractor. Numbers looked solid, good margins, consistent revenue, equipment included, and a backlog of booked jobs. On paper, it felt like a low-drama, blue-collar business with steady demand.

But then I dug in a little more.

Turns out it’s been around just a couple years, and the owner is doing everything. Sales, management, probably even picking up bags of concrete. SDE looks strong, but once you factor in replacing the owner’s full-time workload, the net drops fast. The only full-time employee is the owner. No team, no manager, no process, just grit.

If you’re someone who wants to be on the job site every day and grow from the ground up, this could be your thing. But for me, it’s not quite the right fit. I’m looking for something with systems, team, and at least a little breathing room from day one.

Another good rep. Three down in the Secretary Method. Patterns are starting to show.

Tyler’s Perspective (Experienced Buyer)

🆕 Status Update: When I bought my home service business, I quickly realized the systems were just as important as the route or customer list. And in this case, the systems barely existed. Scheduling was done with the world’s most confusing spreadsheet and a lot of random texts. Invoicing? Same deal. Hit or miss and mostly done through texting too.

If you’re looking at a small business, make sure you really understand how the day-to-day runs. Sellers will often say, “we’ve got systems in place,” but once you take over, you realize that means a few half-working tools and habits duct-taped together.

Building structure from scratch slowed me down way more than I expected. And anytime you roll out changes in a home service business, it tends to shake things up and cause turnover. A business with solid operations already in place is a huge advantage. It’s not the exciting part, but it’s what keeps things moving.

 💡 Cool Business Idea:

🧰 License Launchpad – Exam Prep Built for the Trades

The Idea:
Every trade exam (plumbing, electrical, HVAC, etc.) requires memorizing dense code, passing a multi-hour test, and paying hefty fees to retake if you fail. But most of these trades attract doers — not textbook lovers.

That’s the gap. This business builds a clean, mobile-first study tool with:

  • Practice exams with instant feedback

  • Flashcards, diagrams, and video walkthroughs

  • Visual “cheat sheets” and memory tricks

  • State-specific exam modes

  • AI explanations of tricky code sections

Think: UWorld meets Home Depot. Designed for real-world learners who hate academic fluff.

Startup Tools & Costs:
You don’t need to code this from scratch. You can use:

  • No-code app builder: Glide, Softr, or Tally + Notion – $29/month

  • Content generation: ChatGPT + human editor to build flashcards and explain answers – free or $20/month

  • State code books: $50–100 per state to reference

  • Hosting + domain: ~$10–15/month

  • Optional AI fine-tuning: Claude or GPT-4 fine-tuned with real code examples

Total startup cost: ~$200–$500 for V1
Add more polish later once you validate demand.

By the Numbers:
Here’s what this looks like at different adoption levels:

Scenario

$1,000

$6,900

$2,500

Great

$158,000

$10,000

$148,000

Upside:

  • Sell to trade schools for volume licenses

  • Add affiliate revenue for licensing application help or tools

  • Offer monthly payments ($9.99/mo) to improve conversion

Why it Works:
This idea solves a real bottleneck for tradespeople — not the job itself, but getting licensed to do it. The competition is weak, and your audience is huge, growing, and underserved by digital tools.

✅ Low startup cost
✅ Niche with steady demand
✅ Scales nationally with SEO or Facebook group promotion
