Sam’s Perspective (1st Time Buyer)
🆕 Status Update: Last week I mentioned two businesses we were looking into—a wedding venue and an indoor air quality company. NDAs are signed, and I’ve started getting responses and financials to review.
For the wedding venue, I followed up with questions about lease terms, the drop in revenue last year, and how involved the owner really is. It’s not a perfect setup—some services like catering and florals aren’t bundled anymore—but it’s still running solid events, has future bookings, and comes with no broker fee plus 50/50 seller financing. If the rest of the numbers check out, this one could be a strong fit—especially paired with Simply Silk Flowers, our fake floral rental business.
The other deal? It looked great on paper—about $200K in SDE—but once we looked closer, the owner was only really taking home around $50K. The rest was padded with “add-backs” showing what a new owner could make if they did everything themselves and stripped out a bunch of normal business costs. That kind of stuff shows up all the time, and it’s why you have to read past the headline and into the actual numbers.
Still early in the process, but with every deal, we're getting better at spotting what’s real and what’s just creative math.
Tyler’s Perspective (Experienced Buyer)
🆕 Status Update: When you first buy a business, you're constantly looking for ways to make things run smoother. Some changes are big, but others are as simple as setting up automated invoicing or reminders so clients know when a payment is due. Small tweaks can make a big difference.
That said, I’ve learned how important it is to balance tech and automation with real human interaction. As helpful as automation is, it doesn’t replace face-to-face conversations with your team—especially if you’re not in the same location. In-person meetings tend to bring out better discussions and help surface issues you might not catch over email or Zoom.
We’ve started doing quarterly meet-ups, and they’ve turned into great working sessions and strategy check-ins. So if you’re running a business—even remotely—don’t underestimate the value of just getting in the same room.

Well This Sucks…
I went from the 85 percentile to the 37th over one week. Its safe to say that I'm not great at picking basketball games... but MLB opening day just happened and I'm really not great at betting on baseball either. Looks like my preseason picks of having the Pirates and A's meetup in the World Series may have been a little far-fetched. If I don't start winning I'm going to have to actually start paying attention to my real job.

Did any of y'all see the SNL skit for Shane Gillis' new betting app? I feel personally attacked, mostly because I saw a line that said "Will Vinny take a second mortgage if Houston doesn't end up winning it all?"... the line is -3000. It's hard to take a second one out when you don't have any mortgages, but I'll find away. I'll be YOUR lock for this week.
