šŸ†• Status Update: This week involved two main things. First, I realized just how much businessesforsale.com stinks. A good number of their leads are expired. How do I know this? I narrowed down a long list of potential businesses and called three of them. Here’s how that went:

  1. One listing hadn’t been active for months.

  2. Another was completely delisted.

  3. The third was on hold.

Frustrating? Yes. But there’s a silver lining: calling brokers does have its perks. It’s a great way to get more comfortable talking to them and start building relationships. For example, the broker handling the ā€œon holdā€ listing told me the owner was just a couple of doors down, working in the same shared space. It turns out the owner is implementing systems to make the business more turnkey, so they can better sell the whole thing and retire. They plan to relist it in the future—a potential win if the timing is right!

That same broker also introduced me to a colleague of his, giving me a solid contact for small mobile health businesses.

So, in a weird way, businessesforsale.com gave me a funny story to share with brokers—and who knows, maybe these relationships will pay off down the road. But let’s be honest, most of it was a giant waste of time.

🚨 Status Update: As expected, we have quite a few irons in the fire to start the year. Most recently, I worked on an exisiting lead we’ve had since last year. This opportunity is a minority investment opportunity, and we are proposing a relatively complex structure. That obviously makes this deal a bit unique, and when we initially looked at this deal there were quite a few concerns that lead us to pass. It looks like some of those concerns have been resolved, but some of the largest concerns, including the management team, still exist. This is the founders first business, and our concern is less with them, and more with the managers they have in place. Hopefully they will be able to separate out the emotion, and make the best decision for the business, as we plan on including requirements (including changes to the management structure) as a prerequisite to our investment and involvement. I realize that may be wishful thinking, but it’s worth a shot. Stay tuned.

Let’s talk about the conversation you’ll have in the break room tomorrow. That guy you hate at work will tell you how if the coaches actually put him in his senior year he would’ve been recruited and beat Tebow out for UF’s starting quarterback in 2007… well Greg, you were only on the team because your family gave money to the athletic program.
