Welcome Back to The Corporate Pivot!
It’s National Championship Day, and you already know what’s coming. That one coworker is going to say, “If I didn’t get hurt in high school, I coulda been out there.”
We get it—living in the past is easier than taking a risk on the future. But if you’re ready to do more than just talk, starting or buying a business might be the move. At The Corporate Pivot, we share the tools, lessons, and stumbles from our own journey to help you take the leap.
It’s not easy, but it sure beats 40 years of Monday meetings. Let’s get to work.
Here’s what we have for you today:
Pivot Perspectives: Sam talks about navigating the frustrating process of brokers while exploring a marine cleaning business with potential but notable risks. Tyler talks about leveraging creative deal structures and cash contributions to negotiate a minority investment in a small business acquisition. | Acquisition Alerts:

Sam’s Perspective (1st Time Buyer)
🆕 Status Update: This week, I came across a broker who actually follows up regularly and even cc’s the owner on emails, instead of acting like a gatekeeper with a recruiter-style approach. Honestly, that typical roadblock is frustrating—it can take around two weeks just to get any information on a business.
What’s refreshing is how companies listed on OpenFair.co operate. Their model is designed to sell businesses within 90 days, so brokers are incentivized to push deals forward and be helpful.
The business in question is a marine cleaning operation located a couple of hours from me. It’s profitable, but there are some concerns—mainly the reliance on skilled labor and the lack of contracts. That said, it shows potential, so I’ll keep digging.
I’m waiting on the owner to answer a few key questions before moving forward. My focus is on understanding:
The owner’s current role in the business,
Staffing and whether subcontractors are involved,
If the business can be run absentee or semi-absentee, and
Clarifying the financials.
I’ll share updates next week once I hear back.
Tyler’s Perspective (Experienced Buyer)
🚨 Status Update: The ability to structure deals is truly a valuable skill with small business acquisitions. It’s no secret that interest in small business acquisitions has skyrocketed recently, and that obviously means more competition for buyers. This is great news for sellers, but for buyers, it means you will need to differentiate yourself. For us, we are working on a uniquely structured deal as minority investors. We will be bringing cash to the deal, so luckily that will give us an inherently superior position in this negotiation, but the owner is also interested in having Sam and me involved in the management of the company. This will obviously be tricky to negotiate, but we anticipate engaging in a bit of a lengthy negotiation, as this is the owner’s first business and they are clearly emotionally attached to it. Stay tuned.

💡 Cool Business Idea: Instant Fence Estimates with AI
Getting a fence installed shouldn’t feel like navigating a maze. Currently, the process involves calling companies, waiting days for someone to visit, and then getting a quote that feels more confusing than transparent. The Fence Builder Tool solves this by offering instant, AI-powered fence estimates.
Using Google Maps, homeowners outline their desired fence on a digital map, choose the material, and get an immediate cost estimate. No appointments, no waiting, no surprises. Once completed, the homeowner's info and project details are passed to local suppliers or contractors who pay for high-quality leads. This system not only saves time but also simplifies the process for everyone involved. Built using Cursor for just $20 and with a free Google Maps API allowance under $100/month, this business is low-cost, scalable, and highly profitable.
Business Plan Breakdown
Revenue Model
Lead Sales: Contractors and suppliers pay $50–$150 per lead based on project size and type.
Subscription Services: Contractors can subscribe for premium placement ($200/month).
DIY Subscription Add-on: Homeowners pay $20/month to experiment with multiple designs and export project details.
Startup Costs
Cursor AI Platform Development: $20
Google Maps API (Free for first $100/month): $0
Marketing Campaigns (targeting suppliers/contractors): $500/month
Hosting and Maintenance: ~$50/month
Profitability Scenarios
Bad Scenario:
20 leads sold/month at $50/lead = $1,000 revenue
Monthly profit = ~$450
Good Scenario:
100 leads sold/month at $75/lead + 10 premium subscriptions = $9,500 revenue
Monthly profit = ~$9,000
Best Scenario:
200 leads/month at $100/lead + 25 premium subscriptions = $25,000 revenue
Monthly profit = ~$24,450
By leveraging AI and Google Maps, this business streamlines an outdated process, saving time for homeowners and providing valuable leads to contractors. Plus, with such low startup costs and scalable potential, it's a smart way to break into the home improvement tech space. Ready to fence in those profits?
