đź’¸ The Hidden 1% Fee + The Wedding Flower Hack

This week is all about spotting the hidden drags that quietly steal your money.
You’ll see how a simple tool shows the true cost of advisor fees, a business idea that flips the wedding flower industry, and a new app that saves hours every week.

1. Cool Business Idea of the Week
🌸 Simply Silk Flowers – Rent, Don’t Buy
Real wedding flowers are a scam. The average couple spends $2,500–$6,000 on flowers that get tossed out hours later. Guests can’t tell the difference in photos, yet couples are stuck paying premium prices.
That’s where Simply Silk Flowers comes in. Instead of buying, couples rent luxury silk arrangements — arches, bouquets, and centerpieces — that look real, photograph perfectly, and can be reused dozens of times.
Good idea? Check out our brand new Instagram page that we made for this exact business. Simply Silk Flower Rentals
đź’° Quick Snapshot
Cost to build a set: ~$500
Rental price per event: $1,000+
Gross profit per rental: ~$700
20 rentals/year: $14,000 revenue from one set
Startup costs: $15k lean launch (inventory + delivery van + branding)
The kicker? Weddings aren’t the only market. These same sets can be used for corporate events, galas, photo shoots, or even hotels on subscription.
I built out a full playbook in a PowerPoint slide deck using Gamma.app — costs, revenue scenarios, and even the upside potential.
⚠️ Spoiler alert, this business plan slide deck comes out insanely good. I fully expected an AI PowerPoint builder to stink, like a lot of tools do. Go look at how cool the result is and then use this for every presentation you have in the future!

2. Automation of the Week
📅 Motion – The Calendar That Plans Your Day For You
What’s Broken
Most people live out of a messy combo of Google Calendar, to-do lists, and sticky notes. The result? Overlapping tasks, forgotten deadlines, and hours wasted on context switching.
Meet the Fix
Motion is an AI-powered calendar + task manager that automatically builds your schedule. You drop in tasks, deadlines, and meetings, and Motion rearranges your day to maximize focus time while keeping priorities on track.
What It Costs
Individual ($19/month) – Smart scheduling, task prioritization, AI time blocking.
Team ($12/user/month) – Shared projects, collaborative planning, workload balancing.
How You Can Use It
Auto-block time for your top 3 priorities instead of hoping they get done.
Avoid burnout by balancing meetings with focused work sessions.
Run your whole business from one “command center” that adjusts in real time.

3. Pivot Update of the Week
📝 Sam’s Update (Aspiring Entrepreneur) – X/100 Businesses Reviewed
This week I used Lovable for the first time and just typed out an idea — and it worked. The result is the Fee Drag Analyzer, a simple tool that shows how much advisor fees eat into your portfolio over time.
What blew me away was how fast it came together. No overthinking, no endless tweaking — I literally described what I wanted, and within hours I had a live site anyone could use. And the impact? Eye-opening. Even a “tiny” 1% fee compounds into hundreds of thousands of dollars lost over decades.
It reminded me of the Simply Silk Flowers playbook too. Both ideas highlight the same principle:
👉 People accept huge hidden costs (advisor fees, wedding flowers) because that’s “how it’s always done.” But if you clearly show them the drag and offer a smarter alternative, they’ll switch.
💡 Tip of the Week: Don’t wait for the “perfect” app or product. Type it out, build it small, and ship it. Sometimes all it takes is a weekend experiment to prove a point and start getting traction.
📝 Tyler’s Update (Seasoned Owner)
When you run a small business, having the right accounting firm can make all the difference (especially as we are coming up on the extension deadline). A good accountant should feel like a partner (i.e., someone who understands your business, keeps you organized, and helps you plan for the future, not just file taxes once a year).
If you’re not getting clear communication, proactive advice, or you constantly feel in the dark, it may be time to shop around. Remember, you’re the client, and you deserve to feel confident in how your books are being managed. Don’t be afraid to “fire” an accounting firm that isn’t serving your needs. We just switched accounting firms this year, so we’ll report back, but many factors led to our change. Most notably we needed someone to help with the growth of our most active small business and to help plan for our future. Easy isn’t always right…
