Sam’s Perspective (1st Time Buyer)
🆕 Status Update: This week I’ve been using the lead generator tool I built to start digging into lawn care and pest control companies. Not the guys mowing your yard, but the ones that actually focus on keeping your grass green and healthy.
Why this niche? Because I just left one of the big national companies and honestly, they weren’t great. My grass died, the service was generic, and no one ever came out to inspect anything. So I switched to a local company, and it was a completely different experience. They inspected the yard, checked sprinkler coverage, adjusted the treatment to match my lawn, and actually explained what was going on.
This is the kind of business I like—hands-on, local, and focused on results. So now I’m using the tool to find more companies like that. It’s one thing to see the opportunity on paper, but when you live through the customer experience and see the gap in service, it gets even more interesting.
Tyler’s Perspective (Experienced Buyer)
🆕 Status Update: As a small business owner, bookkeeping is one of the most important things you can invest in. Good books are the foundation for financial clarity, and with tax season always looming, there’s never a bad time to tighten things up.
One thing I’ve done since the beginning of my business journey is to track income and expenses regularly. Waiting until the end of the year—or even doing it every six months—can lead to a mess. Doing weekly or monthly reviews can save you time, stress, and money.
Depending on the size of your business, you can either hire a professional or do it yourself to start. For me, I began with a professional service to get things set up properly, and then I brought it in-house after about a year.
It’s definitely not the most exciting part of owning a business, but it’s one of the most essential. Get this right, and a lot of other things fall into place.

💡 Cool Business Idea:
♻️ DrainBuddy — The Gutter Filter That Pays Off for the Planet
This week I wanted to shift gears.
Not every business needs to be software.
And not every opportunity is just about profit.
Sometimes, the best ideas solve a real-world problem, help cities run cleaner, and still leave you with monthly revenue.
DrainBuddy is one of those ideas.
It's a simple gutter or storm drain insert that catches trash and oil runoff before it hits waterways. It filters debris, snaps into place, and connects to a dashboard that tracks how much pollution it prevents. This can be used by homeowners, HOAs, commercial property managers, or cities.
Add a QR code or serial number, and now it’s not just a filter. It’s an environmental report card that proves your property is taking action.
Think Brita filter meets civic compliance.
And best of all, it’s a recurring model. Filters need to be replaced. Dashboards can be white-labeled. Sponsors can pay to be featured. Cities want the data.
This is a business that helps the planet and builds steady value at the same time.
🛠 Expenses and Tools Needed
Prototype cost: $300–$500 (3D print or mold + mesh + waterproof QR tag)
Materials per unit: ~$10–$15 (reusable frame + disposable filter insert)
Web app/dashboard (Supabase or Firebase): $25/month
Hosting and QR code tracking: $10–$25/month
Logo and branding: $100–$250
Legal and insurance (if scaling to cities): ~$1,000–$2,000 once needed
Startup estimate to build and pilot:
Lean DIY: $500–$1,000
With design, dashboard, and small batch production: $3,000–$5,000
📈 Revenue Potential
Scenario | Units Deployed | Monthly Recurring | Total Revenue |
---|---|---|---|
Bad | 25 units | $5/month dashboard + refills | ~$250/month |
Good | 250 units | $5–$15/month depending on features | $2,500–$3,750/month |
Great | 1,000+ units | $10–$20/month from cities, HOAs, or sponsors | $10,000+/month recurring |
You can also sell direct to customers:
$49.99 for filter frame
$12/month for dashboard tracking and quarterly filter refills
Optional upgrades: branded data reports, SMS alerts, sponsorship banners
🎯 Why It’s Worth Building
DrainBuddy is simple to understand, visually satisfying to explain, and designed for recurring impact.
It gives cities and businesses the one thing they want but rarely get: proof that their environmental efforts are working.
With rising pressure around stormwater compliance and ESG goals, this could be a physical product with digital scale.
Want to clean up the world and build a solid business doing it?
Start with the curb.
